What is Emotional Freedom Technique?

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a psychological acupressure technique like acupuncture but without the needles.[ii] For thousands of years, Chinese medicine doctors have used acupuncture to alleviate physical and emotional conditions. Instead of using needles, EFT is implemented by the patient using their fingers to tap on a formula of specific meridian points that reduce stress.  This is combined with   psychological techniques to help the patient focus on and release the issue.

EFT is one of the best tools to permanently rid yourself of the subconscious beliefs holding you back. The tool works on everything including physical pain, achieving goals, dealing with fears, peak performance, relationship problems, weight loss. The beauty of this technique is that you can learn to do it yourself anywhere, any time, and on any issue. When it doubt, tap![i]

To perform EFT you first start by acknowledging whatever the problem is you have and writing down every negative thought associated with that problem, we will go into more detail on how to do this in the following weeks. You then tap on each acupressure point (shown in the diagram below) 5-7 times while repeating different phrases related to your problem, you first start with negative phrases for a few rounds and then move on to positive phrases to alleviate the feelings associated with the problem. The process of EFT has been scientifically proven to lower cortisol levels.

EFT Points

A study was carried out by Dr. Dawson Church, one of the world’s leading experts in energy psychology,[iii] where he got 83 people to participate in one of three groups. One group had to undergo an hour session of EFT tapping, another had a session of traditional talk therapy with a trained therapist and the other group received no treatment at all (the control group). He measured cortisol levels in all patients before and after the treatment and then compared the results. The results found that the cortisol levels of the people who had undergone EFT had decreased significantly between 24-50%.  The people who had traditional therapy or no treatment did not have any significant change in their cortisol levels[iv]. Amazing right!?

If you would like to know more about the scientific behind how effective EFT is I suggest you listen to this great audio with David Feinstein, PhD who is a clinical psychologist who has served on the faculties of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Antioch College, and the California School of Professional Psychology.

Over the coming weeks we will provide you with more in depth information on EFT and how you can use it to work specifically with changing your limiting beliefs. We will also provide you with step-by-step instructions, some tapping scripts and demonstrations.
